Your First Radio
Buy for the operating you want to do first. For many new operators, that means a practical VHF/UHF setup for local repeaters and nets before spending heavily on advanced equipment.
Common starter options
A low-cost radio can be useful, but the antenna, programming, power, and support matter as much as the radio itself.
Handheld radio
Portable and affordable. Good for learning local repeaters, events, and basic operating. Performance improves with a better antenna.
Mobile VHF/UHF radio
More power and better audio for vehicles, home, or field use. Often a better long-term local station.
HF station
For regional and worldwide contacts. Usually best after learning antennas, grounding, band conditions, and operating technique.
The antenna system makes or breaks the station
A good antenna in a good location can make a modest radio perform well. A poor antenna can make an expensive radio frustrating. For VHF/UHF, height, feedline loss, and antenna placement matter. For HF, antenna length, matching, noise, grounding, and site limits matter.
Before you buy
Ask: What bands do I need? Can it store local repeaters? Is programming practical? Are accessories available? Can I get help using it? Is the antenna suitable?
Do not start with the wrong problem
Many new operators blame the radio when the real issue is programming, antenna location, low battery, wrong tone, wrong offset, or poor expectations about handheld range.
Programming
Verify frequency, offset direction, tone mode, tone frequency, power level, and memory name.
Power
Weak batteries and poor power adapters create problems that look like radio failure.
Antenna
Small rubber antennas are convenient but limited. Try a better antenna before giving up.
Coverage
Terrain, buildings, trees, vehicle placement, and indoor use all affect VHF/UHF range.
Learn the local system first
