How to Use a Repeater
A repeater receives your signal on one frequency and retransmits it on another. Your radio must be programmed correctly, and your operating should leave room for others.
Four settings must be right
If any one of these is wrong, you may hear the repeater but fail to access it.
Receive frequency
The repeater output frequency you listen to.
Offset
The transmit/receive split your radio uses when you key up.
Tone
CTCSS/PL tone that lets the repeater receiver hear authorized access attempts.
Mode and power
Use the correct FM mode and enough power for clean access, not excessive power.
What happens when you transmit
Your radio transmits on the repeater input. The repeater receiver hears you, the controller manages timing and identification, and the transmitter rebroadcasts your audio on the output frequency.

User radio β repeater receiver β controller β repeater transmitter β other stations.
Keep it simple, clear, and courteous
Repeaters are shared club and community resources. Operate in a way that lets others join, ask for help, or pass priority traffic.
Listen first
Make sure the frequency is clear before transmitting.
Identify
Use your call sign. Do not kerchunk without identifying.
Leave pauses
Pause between transmissions so other stations can break in.
Amateur and GMRS repeaters are not the same service
Repeaters can exist in different FCC radio services. Amateur-radio repeaters require amateur privileges and amateur identification. GMRS repeaters require GMRS licensing and GMRS operating rules.

What to say
Keep your first transmission short. If you are testing, identify and say what you are doing.
